Description

Thermo Scientific Niton XL5 Plus Handheld XRF Analyzer Repair

The Niton XL5 Plus is the flagship of the Niton handheld line: a 5W X-ray tube — the most powerful fitted to a handheld analyzer — paired with a large-area silicon drift detector and a six-position filter wheel, all in a 2.8 lb (1.3 kg) body. The tight geometry between tube, sample and detector is what lets it reach light elements such as magnesium, aluminum, silicon, phosphorus and sulfur without helium purge or a vacuum pump. That same geometry means faults cluster tightly around the X-ray path.

June Company’s certified technicians repair the Niton XL5 Plus for PMI inspectors, scrap recyclers, foundry QA teams, and mining geologists. We diagnose and repair at the board and component level, and every instrument is functionally tested against a known reference sample before it ships back.

Common Niton XL5 Plus problems we fix

  • Punctured or clouded measurement window — the most common failure on any handheld XRF, and one that degrades light-element results well before it fails outright.
  • Detector resolution loss — peaks broadening until alloy matches stop resolving cleanly.
  • X-ray tube output degradation — longer count times needed for the same precision.
  • Filter wheel and shutter faults — the wheel failing to index, throwing errors mid-measurement.
  • Failed system checks — the analyzer no longer standardizing correctly at startup.
  • Thermal shutdown in hot environments — cooling and thermal management serviced for scrapyard and outdoor use.
  • Hot-swap battery and charging faults — including the circuit that carries the unit between packs.
  • Touchscreen, trigger and proximity-interlock failures — the controls that stop the analyzer firing when they fail.

FAQs

My XL5 Plus is reading low on light elements — is that repairable? Usually. Light-element response is the first thing a damaged window or a degraded detector affects, and it is recoverable.

Do you work on the X-ray tube itself, or only swap modules? We diagnose at the component level and repair the X-ray path rather than replacing whole assemblies wherever the fault allows.

Every repair is backed by a 90-day parts-and-labor warranty, with a firm quote before any work begins. Email us or submit a service request.
